I understand your obvious scowl to the title. Romance is romance, right? Anything that makes us swell with a whimsical feeling and makes us want to crush our pillows and squeal in delight is romance. There might be good romance and bad romance, like black and white. But weird romance? A shade of grey?
Allow me to explain what I mean by "weird" precisely. "Weird" in this context is used for those romantic scenarios that made me conjecture ( if not anything less) as to what did the author have in mind when she was penning it down ( sometimes even formulating the basic story line) because either it lacks any notion of feasibility or it's way too silly.
And in a way, I'm only saving you from reading a disaster, so don't look sullen, thank me.
Now, its just my petty opinion so kindly try not to take personal insults.
Ladies, please sheath your claws. I'm not condemning the center-of-your-universe Christian Grey, but only pointing out the absurdity of it. Take a second and think, think really hard, CAN IT BE TRUE?! Would you do it? Will you chew your bottom lip when your desire is taking out contracts at the mention of intimacy? I would either be running for the hills and/or referring him a good mental care institution, not squirm in daze.
And it might be the feminist in me, but no matter how divine and sugary his demeanor is, I can never take blows (pun intended) to my pride, like she did.
The man is a massive, unholy and stacked mass of issues! He doesn't need love, he needs some serious mental care. You name it and it becomes his issue; touch - issue, trust - issue, 'hearts and flowers' - ISSUE, anger management - ISSUE!!. He's a walking, blazing red siren of danger!
While I understand how exhilarating her experience might sound, tempting even but you wouldn't make the same choices as her should you be Anastasia Steele. Yes there's "I'm going to spread my wings and take the leap of faith, not minding the dangers" and then there's "Yes, I see the the well is dark, scary, lonely and cruel but I'm still going to dive in headfirst because I want to be something else!". It. Was. Confusing.
But the thing that made me furious was how inferior it made women look. She was submitting to him just because he was wealthy, gorgeous and he may have stirred some feelings ( which he took advantage of at any and every possibility) . It made me sneer at the book because Ana lost her personality by the time. She became what he wanted her to. She was overshadowed and overpowered by his preferences. It made women seem as given and easy conquests if you have looks and money. It was demeaning and insulting. And it stroked the indignant part of me.
And yes, Christian wasnt very impressive either. He was as she has mentioned a few times "megalimaniac". Not in sense of power in corporate world but he faked his prowl in emotional realm while he was himself "an adolescent". He was a contradictory character in himself.
